It’s not every day you get to hold a real Academy Award Oscar (yes it’s 100% real).
Many years ago i worked in the film and television industry as a mould maker for various special effects and props departments. I worked on many productions from the Matrix Trilogy, Star Wars Attack of the Clones. Mission Impossible 2 and many others.
After suffering a debilitating back injury in 2000 i left the industry a few years later to pursue a career in health and fitness.
I have many friends still working in the industry and i’m always curious as to what film’s being made and what cool new products they’re using.
Recently my former work colleague Adam Johansen invited me around to ODD Studios to see all the amazing work him and his supremely talented crew did on a bunch of recent films like Mad Max Fury Road (which won them the Oscar), Star Wars and their recent work on Alien Covenant amongst others. These guys are without a doubt the leaders in spfx makeup and monsters in the country and rank right up there with the best in the world.
Adam and i began our careers together at a place called Showtronix on Sydney’s northern beaches and we both got our first film gig working together with Neal Scanlon Studios on Babe 2 Pig in the City.
So cool to see how far Adam, his business partner Damien and the crew at ODD Studios have come over the last 15 years and it was a privilege to see some of their amazing creations. Plus it was a real buzz to get to hold one of these little gold statues that i’ve watched countless actors, film directors and other film crew members be awarded on tv over the years.
